B.Sc. in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering

INTRODUCTION

The undergraduate program in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering provides intensive, hands-on laboratory-based coursework and training which allows our graduates to master a diverse array of skills in this field. The program incorporates the theoretical concepts taught in lectures with the fundamental practical application of these theories in the intensive laboratory component. The emphasis is on real-life proficiency in the practice as well as the theory of biotechnology. The students need to engage themselves for a research project or an extensive review in their final term of four year undergraduate program towards their theses as partial fulfillment for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering. Based on this focus, it is expected that the high level of hands-on laboratory training or extensive literature survey received in the program will enable students to be prepared, upon graduation, to be immediately competitive in the biotechnology job market. Since the coursework is focused on supplying the students with skills in and comprehension of a wide variety of laboratory techniques, it is expected that the training acquired in the program will also enable graduates from our program to qualify for acceptance into a graduate or professional program. Whether the proficiency received here serves as a terminal degree or lays the foundation for entry into a graduate or professional school, students receive a high level of one-on-one training and faculty interaction that is exceptional.

Mission

The mission of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering Discipline at Khulna University is to provide the students with an education that establishes a strong foundation and appreciation for understanding developments in the rapidly advancing field of biotechnology and its allied branches, to develop the technical and critical thinking skills necessary for success in the field, to foster ethical behavior, and to promote outreach, providing the nation and abroad with highly trained professional who are able to implement the scientific principles to the continuous improvement of the safe, quality and value biotechnological services and products. We seek to provide a responsive learning environment of creative thinking that enables all students to achieve their highest level of proficiency.

 

Program Objectives

The 4 year Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering program objectives are two fold.

–To prepare students for careers of constructive service to society in academia, government, industry, agriculture, livestock and health related fields.

–To initiate interdisciplinary research and educational opportunities to solve problems that will improve the quality of life by addressing health, agricultural, environmental problems of the region and the country

 

Learning Objectives

Upon the completion of the Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering  program, the graduates will be able to:

  1. demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the multidisciplinary as well interdisciplinary fundamental concepts in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering
  2. operate and maintain the basic biotechnology equipments; adhering to good laboratory practices and biosafety issues
  3. analyze, synthesize and integrate knowledge and information within the context of the multidisciplinary as well as interdisciplinary areas in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering
  4. demonstrate the ability to apply the theoretical knowledge and practical skills in addressing a scientific problem
  5. conduct basic guided research
  6. demonstrate the ability to seek, adapt and provide solutions to address challenges, issues and concerns in biotechnology and its allied fields
  7. recognize and practice the concept of lifelong learning for continuous self improvement
  8. demonstrate an understanding and awareness of basic commercial, ethical, legal and social issues related to Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering
  9. communicate and demonstrate adequate interpersonal skills
  1. GPA 4.00 in the scale of 5.00 at HSC/ Equivalent Examination
  2. Minimum GPA 4.00 in Biology, Physics, Chemistry and GPA 3.50 in English
